The War Against Women

'... I think President Obama said it best during the debates - "no one is pro-abortion". No one wants to have an abortion. The only way to prevent abortion is not by killing doctors and forcing celibacy on unwilling teenagers, but by giving women and men education and access to birth control, sex education in schools, and encouragement of safe ways to experience sexual pleasure (masturbation, etc.). In a perfect world, no one would have an abortion. No one would make a mistake. No condoms would break. No one would get raped. No babies would have trisomy-13 or develop without brains or have Treacher-Collins. No women would have massive preeclampsia or placenta previa. But these things happen. And for that reason, abortion needs to remain safe and legal. Dr. Tiller's death at the hands of terrorists makes reproductive rights in this country one step closer to extinction. Imagine how many thousands of women will suffer and die in back alley abortions and from terrible, fatal diseases. The pro-lifers (most ironic group name ever) seem to prefer that gravely ill children are forced to suffer on respirators and women and raped 10 year old girls die in childbirth - unless, of course, it was their 10 year old daughter. Let's see how pro life they are then.

There is a war going on against women and their bodies. There is a war and there have been casualties, and no one will say that's what's going on because there are women fighting women (like Cheryl Sullenger from Operation Rescue, for instance). It is fine to make that choice for yourself in your own life and for your own religion, but it is NOT okay to make that choice for anyone else, and using violence to bully doctors and women into submission is terrorism. Plain and simple. Until we start using this kind of language, until we call this what it really is, until we TALK about it - we will lose this war. We are losing it now.'
